AbstractThe use of neutrons as a probe for the investigation of materials at the atomic level has grown in importance thanks to the availability of high-intensity neutron sources. These large scale research infrastructures allow for the simultaneous execution of a large number of independent experiments. The interaction of neutrons of different energies and wavelengths with the materials make it a highly penetrating probe, usually used for non-invasive investigation of the structure and of the microscopic dynamics of new materials. More recent is the application of neutron techniques to the investigation of cultural heritage to study art objects and archaeological finds. In particular, neutron radiography, neutron diffraction and neutron activation analysis provide valuable complementary information to address issues of provenance, authenticity of the artefact and preservation techniques. This report examines some basic concepts and presents the results of some encouraging neutron applications in cultural heritage research.
