Abstract(摘要):

The intensity and brightness of a circulating proton (ion) beam can be increased up to the Laslett space charge tune shift limit (ΔQ~0.3) by means of charge exchange injection or by electron cooling but could not overcome this limit. Significantly higher brightness can be produced by means of charge exchange injection with space charge compensation. However, the brightness of the space charge compensated beam is limited at low level by the electron-proton (e-p) instability, sometimes known as the electron cloud instability.

Fortunately, the e-p instability can be self-stabilized at high beam density. A Beam Brightness Booster (BBB) for production of a “superintense” circulating beam with intensity and brightness far above the space charge limit (calculated ΔQ>>1) is proposed. Energy loss in the high-current H- injection gas jet stripping target also provides ionization cooling to compensate multiple scattering to prevent emittance growth, energy straggling, and particle loss. This BBB requires a broadband feedback system for e-p instability suppression and can be simplified by development of a nonlinear nearly integrable focusing system with a broad spread of betatron tunes to provide Landau damping. Electrons are prevented from overloading the induction acceleration system in the BBB by a novel ExB field trap.

Some aspects of a superintense beam production in the Beam Brightness Booster (BBB) were discussed in publications: V. Dudnikov, PAC 2001; V. Dudnikov at al., PAC 2005; IPAC 2011; IPAC 2012; NA PAC 2013
